Fire Safety Training: What you need to know for your workplace

What is Fire Safety and why is it important?

Fire safety in any workplace is everyone’s responsibility. If a fire occurs at a place of work, this could result in business disruption and even people getting hurt or losing their lives. If you know how to identify the risks and hazards of fires on your premises then you will be assisting in the safety of yourself and your co-workers. Attending a basic fire safety training course will give you an introduction as well as the tools to understand fire causes, learn about the different types of fires, and which fire extinguisher is suitable for which type of fire.

fire safety legal side

The Legal side

The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Regulated Fire Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 states the legislation about the employer’s and employee’s responsibilities when it comes to compliance and duties of all the relevant people in the business. The employer is known as the responsible person with the final responsibility for their employee’s safety at work.

Some of their duties include but are not limited to: appointing a competent person to carry out a fire risk assessment; informing the employees of the fire risks and hazards discovered; establishing an appropriate emergency plan and reviewing this on a regular basis; having suitable systems in place for calling the emergency services as well as regular servicing and maintaining fire equipment and providing fire safety training to management and other employees within their working hours.

What should fire safety training cover?

OHS Compliance Ltd offers 2 x fire safety courses which are the Level 1 Award in Principles of Fire Safety Awareness and the Level 2 Award in Fire Safety Awareness. The Level 2 Award is also for a fire warden or fire marshal certificate.

Principles of Fire Safety Awareness (Level 1 Award)

This is an introductory training course giving a basic understanding of fire safety. The delegates will learn the important steps to follow in the event of a fire; what the fire triangle is; how you can reduce the chance of a fire starting; what the sources of fuel and ignition in your workplace are and fire extinguishers and their uses on different types of fires. The course will be assessed by a 15-question multiple choice exam at the end.

We offer both face-to-face courses on site at a client’s venue as well as public courses at other venue locations. E-learning courses and online assessments are also an option to achieve this Level 1 Award qualification.

Principles of Fire Safety (Level 2 Award)

This course assists with fire safety management in the workplace by training up the employees who fulfill a fire warden role as well as anyone else who needs a fire safety certificate. One of the requirements to attend this fire safety training course is to have a good understanding of the English language as well as be a minimum age of 14. This course is more in-depth than the Level 1 Award and is assessed by a 20-question multiple choice exam at the end.

This fire safety training for employees course covers hazards and risks of workplace fires: common causes of fires, hazards during or after a fire, and fire spread. The delegate will also train to understand how fire risk can be controlled in the workplace: fire risk assessments and the implementation of the report findings means of escape and raising the alarm, identification of types and uses of fire-fighting equipment, the role of fire wardens on a day-to-day basis as well as in an emergency.

This is another of our courses that are offered in both face-to-face courses on site at a client’s venue as well as public courses at other venue locations. E-learning courses with online assessment and invigilation are a good alternative to train and achieve this Level 2 Award qualification.
